Hey r/Animedubs! You won't have seen me around here before since this isn't really my kinda thing, but I really want to get the word of Gundam out, and it turns out the dub for it is really good! I have edited my post a little from my original [WT!] post over at r/anime, so if any of you don't frequent there, I hope that this will give the series some exposure!
I hope that the subreddit doesn't mind me linking r/anime's wiki page either, it's extremely useful for Gundams viewing order!

It's difficult to get into the anime community without hearing the name Gundam, and perhaps reference to how extensive it is. Mobile Suit Gundam had many far reaching effects on the anime industry, from inspiring the likes of Macross, and leading into the long road to the creation of the idol genre; to creating a huge ocean of mecha pursuing war stories of epic proportions, Gundam is greatly significant for the (for a modern example) Evangelion-like effect it had on the industry. Not only is Gundam significant to the medium as a whole, but it's a solidly written and entertaining show too, making for a worthwhile experience as well!
Gundam follows Amuro Ray as he has to fight for survival in a war between the Principality of Zeon and The Federation of Earth. In the war, Zeon are fighting for the liberation of Federation colonies, we are introduced to the show just after the Federation has finished development on the Gundam, a weapon they believe can fight Zeon!
Each side in the conflict has characters which are developed well, and with believable motives that aren't too difficult to get behind. The depictions of war are relatively realistic too, with loss, grief, and sacrifice being brought up throughout the series, to various levels of effectiveness.
But I don't care about robots fighting!
I'd be lying if I said that Gundam isn't about mechs, but they're certainly not the focus. Sure, plenty of effort has gone into making the mechs mechanically, and aesthetically outstanding, but this isn't what makes Gundam shine. Mobile Suit Gundam is, in reality, a character drama centred on a war in which the primary weapons happen to mecha. This does nothing to take emotion out of a scene, in fact at times Gundam has a tendency to use mechs to do quite the opposite. Not caring about the mechs themselves is to an extent, irrelevant to enjoying the show!
True, but this is a rare case of the summary movies being arguably better than the original TV series. The 3 movies are of course what made Gundam popular in the first place, they can be regarded as better for a variety of reasons. The movies cut the fluff out of 0079 and deliver a more focused narrative than the TV series. Furthermore they do a far better job at introducing 'Newtypes' to the series, something the series handles a bit too quickly, making the ending of the TV version feel somewhat contrived.
There's a goldmine of content once you're in!
The Gundam universe has so much to offer, it's highly unlikely you won't find something to like,/u/RX-Nota made a wonderful [WT!] on Gundam 0080 a 6 episode OVA set just after the events of 0079! Equally the sequel to MSG, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, is absolutely phenomenal, though 0079 is required watching for Zeta. Whether you enjoy SEED or Iron Blooded Orphans, there's probably something in the Gundam Universe for you, even if you can't get into 0079 or it's movies!
Sure you can! r/anime has a guide to getting into Gundam and its watchorders but there are 3 main ways I would recommend to get into the series. Firstly, through 0079 (or its movies) which is what I did, you can watch Gundam 0080 a great 6-episode OVA ([WT!] here), or you could start with the Gundam Thunderbolt movie! which is a more modern Gundam from 2016 ([WT!] here)!
Right so about the dub!
The video quality of the trailer doesn't really lend itself for recommendation at all, but the dub for Mobile Suit Gundam is excellent! Unfortunately watching Gundam dubbed does limit entry point options somewhat, the more recent redub of the TV series is vastly superior to the original dub, and even redoes some sound effects to make it sound better - the issue however is that the movies were not redubbed, making them a somewhat lesser experience compared to the TV series even if it does a good job at ironing out the flaws in the narrative.
Now you're ready to take your first step! 3 movies is easy to consume if 43 episodes seems too much for you, but there are plenty of entry points out there. The Gundam franchise is particularly easy to consume, since most timelines are no more than 4 series long, and I cannot stress enough that r/animes wiki is extremely useful for this.
So go for it friends, check out Gundam!
